Interesting 1850s era Batty "Peace" powder flask, where the valve assembly has been replaced/ remarked with "9 VA" denoting that it was reissued to a member of the 9th Virginia Infantry, who were issued 1841 "Mississippi" rifles with rifleman's accoutrements, which included the Batty flask. We were told that this was picked up from the Antietam battlefield near the Dunker Church, days after the battle. We purchased this from a collector who claimed he got it from Mildred Remsburg’s Antique shop in Sharpsburg, MD in the 1970’s. Mildred was the wife of Fred Remsburg (1903-1978), who had been collecting CW relics since the 1920’s. Most of the relics in their shop were Antietam battlefield pickups from either Samuel Showe (1822-1888) who owned the Jacob Rohrbach House of Sharpsburg during the battle, who picked up many items near what he referred to as “The German Church” (Dunker Church), and other items found by O. T. Reilly (1857-1945) also of Sharpsburg who was a little boy during the battle, but grew up to be a battlefield guide/ relic purveyor. Most likely this flask came from the items of Samuel Showe found near the Dunker Church in the days after the battle, near where the 9th Virginia was hotly contested for much of the battle.
