Very nice example of a Federal M1858 forage cap, type II. Although the label is long gone, as is commonly the case, this cap appears to be nearly identical to the other examples out there that were made by LJ & I Phillips of New York, though it is impossible to confirm. The chin strap is fixed on with eagle "I" buttons, that appear to be original to the cap, indicating this may have been worn by an infantry officer, though this is clearly an enlisted man's issue cap. This hat displays well, and is an essential piece of headgear to display with any collection of Federal uniforms and gear. One of the most iconic and recognizable pieces from the war.
