When we acquired this item, we were told it came from an old Gettysburg collection and was picked up off the Sherfy farm days after the battle. It is most certainly a Confederate manufactured cap box, completely hand sewn, with very thin belt loops on the back, crudely sewn on with twine. The leather is a bit stiff, though still pliable, adding to the story that it very well could have been picked up after being exposed to the hot July 1863 sun for several days. Unfortunately it is missing its finial.
